What does footing mean?

Footing means totaling the amounts in a column, like a ledger or trial balance. Because you're totaling up numbers and listing them at the foot of the column, it's called footing.
Footing usually happens at the end of an accounting period to prep financial statements.

Footing is just adding up all the numbers in a column to make sure they add up correctly. For example, if you're adding all the expenses or incomes in a list, you "foot" the column to get the total.
