The balance sheet always shows fixed assets at their historical cost . Why is that?

Because you don't want to have to constantly re-evaluate the value of your assets on the books. It's easier to just leave it where it was when you bought it.

It's more straightforward. Revaluing assets every time their market value changes would be difficult.
