The journal is the first place where all financial transactions are captured before they go into the main accounting. It’s like the raw diary of everyday finances, like sales, purchases, and expenses. It's kept in chronological order, so it's easy to reference past transactions.
Once something is recorded in the journal, it's then transferred to the ledger. The ledger is organized by account.

And to build on what Arnold mentioned, the journal isn’t just about recording transactions haphazardly. It’s structured to include specific details like date, accounts involved, amounts, and brief descriptions. This detailed record keeping makes it easier to track down where money came from or went to later on.
Also, the reason transactions are recorded in chronological order is because they're supposed to be recorded as they happen. It's helpful during audits.
